New homes and commercial space will soon replace the long-vacant K-Mart on the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Pacific Street in Rocklin.

The city council gave the green light on Oct. 8, which will transform the lot into a 15.4-acre project of 180 apartments, 40 single-family homes and two commercial buildings.

The Quarry Place apartments will cater to those with specific incomes, including recent college graduates, teachers and entry-level firefighters.

A swimming pool, dog park, children’s play area and other amenities and facilities will be available at the new apartment complex.

Much like the apartments, the single-family homes are priced for entry-level buyers.

Renters at Quarry Place can opt to upgrade into a single-family home once they’re ready to take a step into home ownership.

The developments represent a fresh start for the area and for new residents entering the real estate market for the first time.

Demolition of the current building is set to begin at the end of the year. Construction is expected to take 18 months.
